Do I need to be technical to succeed with an online business?

Do I Need To Be Technical?

This is perhaps the most asked question I get from people who are considering taking the plunge and starting an online business. Many new entrepreneurs and business people think they need to have technical skill sets or be tech savvy to succeed online. The simple answer to the question is no, you do not have to be a technical expert.

In most instances diving down a technical “rabbit hole” will get you no where. You don’t have to be a coder or a designer to get your idea online and to market.

First, you can easily outsource many of these functions. You can also typically pay much less than you would think. By using talented individuals in locations outside the U.S. or U.K. for example, you can find someone highly skilled who can execute what you need completed at a fraction of the cost. These costs would be about 10 times more if looking for talent in London or New York.

Resources to Find Freelancers

Here are two sites that I can recommend for finding cost effective freelancers:

Fiverr.com: Search for the skill set you need. You can find someone who can code and construct a user experience site for dollars.

Upwork.com: Upwork is similar. Place your project on the job boards. Then you’ll get freelancers pitching and bidding for your project.

The most successful online entrepreneurs aren’t the technical folks; they’re the strategy people. Understanding strategy and knowing what you want to do doesn’t require any technical expertise.

If you can write down your strategy: what your product is, why it matters, your message and how it’s different then you can find the technical support you need.

It’s never a bad idea to learn some basic technical skills like how to publish a blog or upload a video. You can learn that in minutes. But don’t waste your time trying to pull off things that are much more complex like a landing page. If you have the idea someone else can make it look good and work.

When you hit a wall of frustration, that’s when it’s time to bring in the professionals. Even if the software says you can learn in an hour, think again. Because that’s probably not accurate. As a business owner, you have to focus your time on what matters the most like:

  • Improving your product
  • Creating a great customer experience
  • Being your brand’s visionary
  • Helping your product stand out

You should concentrate on how you can bring value to the marketplace, not worry about website development, coding or even design.

It certainly won’t hurt to have some basic technical knowledge and to understand things like social media marketing and email marketing. But don’t let this be a hurdle to you getting your business going. Don’t procrastinate on getting your product or service to market because you don’t have a technical background. Find the help you need for the more complex parts so you can focus on the strategy.

Meet Your Trainer

STUART ROSS

Welcome! I started my journey into the digital and entrepreneurial world with nothing more than perseverance, a laptop and a dream. To date, I’ve created a multimillion dollar lifestyle business in the education and technology industry that I absolutely LOVE. My driving passion is sharing the know-how and mindset that lets others feel the same way.

The reason they call me The Freedom Entrepreneur is because I refused to accept the constraints of traditional employment. Having successfully found a better route, I’m committed to showing others how to live life on their own terms too.

Four Principles To Creating Your Best Life

In life I believe you don’t get what you really want if you’re not clear on your vision.

Your dreams and the clarity of your true vision are the catalyst to your success in business and in life; they provide the targets for success. When you start to picture yourself living your dreams you will start attracting it minute by minute and your subconscious mind will find a way to make that dream a reality. Life & death is in the power of the tongue – the words you speak are directly connected to the vision you see.

“If you ever want to become successful in life, find someone who’s done what it is you want to do and duplicate them.”

That’s a principle that I live by every single day. Find someone who’s been there, done what you are looking to do and who is willing to teach you how to do the same thing. Follow the path they are going to set for you. Success is much more obtainable when you have someone who is more experienced than you are and who has accepted personal responsibility for your success in life.

For example, in business you want to find mentors who have the money and lifestyle you want, and build a relationship with them. Based on who they are they may or may not be personally accessible to you, but you can still be mentored by them, just from a far. Whenever you see them talking either in a crowd or on stage, or when reading their books or listening to their videos, always be prepared with your notepad and pen, they are priceless tools that will make you millions.

Simply put the deposit is first, the withdrawal comes later. You have to decide what you’re willing to give up temporarily to get what you picture. …success is not easy or convenient. However… I believe success is very simple to obtain if you do the work.

It’s not necessarily easy to build a business, but it is SIMPLE. Everything in life is about giving and receiving, if you sow sparingly you will reap sparingly. If you give a lot you’ll get a lot – a simple reality!

Without knowing your true values, you will perish by replaying your past, with all its failures. I always make my key decisions based on my true values, with definitiveness and purpose. I use my values to ensure I maintain balance and flow in life and to keep me on track with what matters most.

Without an awareness around your true values and purpose in life you will likely focus on means goals rather than end goals. The problem with this is that when we focus on our means goals (means to an end) we will nearly always make the wrong decisions for ourselves. These decisions will most often lead to a very unfulfilled life with a constant awareness around the fact we are not living a life of purpose and passion. When you define your true values they will become a barometer when making key decisions. As a result, you are much more inclined to make the right decision which in turn will lead to true fulfilment.
